This Thursday 1st September I have the great pleasure of playing at Wagon, one of the most respected nights in London, hosted by BBC6 Music’s Chris Hawkins. Chris has been a real champion of mine at 6 Music, and we’d love to have your support.
It’ll also be the first time I’ve ever played these songs with anyone not in my regular band – Harry will be off in Ireland to perform with a friend of mine, Liz Lawrence, so his position behind the kit will be taken by the uber-talented Sam Nadal.
I suppose it’s quite normal for most artists to have a revolving door of hired session goons, but we’re not a normal bunch. We’re a little family, and it matters that we can look across the stage without wondering who will be there.
People may only see us for one hour of our day but the rest of the time we’re milling about and traveling. Personal relationships start to matter as much as musical ability, and little bonds, musical in-jokes, and a deep understanding develop over time. It can only be earned, not bought.
Having said that, a little competition doesn’t hurt, and Sam’s an exceptional drummer, so for a bit of (minor) history in the making (for me at least), get your ass down to The Old Queen’s Head this Thursday. Also playing are Michele Stodart and Lonsdale Boys Club. It’s free to get in and the more the merrier. Come at 7:00ish.
